We’ve been exploring the topic of life’s purpose—what it meanshow it evolves, and the role of connection in living a purposeful life. Purpose, as we’ve defined it, is a constant state of alignment between who we are and what we do. To live a life of purpose, we must cultivate three essential connections: to ourselves, to others, and to the environment.

In this post, I dive deeper into the first and most foundational connection: the connection to self.

The Overlooked Practice of Self-Connection

On the surface, connecting with ourselves might seem simple and obvious. Yet, it’s a practice that many neglect in the busyness of daily life. The reality is that most of our time is spent with our eyes wide open, engaging with the external world, while very little time is dedicated to closing our eyes and watching/listening to our inner world.

The statistics say it all. Research shows that 87% of the US population uses social media daily for an average of 2 hours and 23 minutes. Compare that to the limited number of people who devote time to reflection, meditation, or other practices that foster self-connection. According to the 2022 National Health Interview Survey, only 17% of US adults meditate, despite its well-documented benefits for mental clarity and emotional well-being.

Self-connection is the foundation of living a life of purpose. When we connect with ourselves, we gain clarity about our values, beliefs, and feelings. We understand who we are, which is essential to creating alignment between who we are and what we do.

Two Paths to Self-Connection

I've found that connecting with ourselves involves two complementary practices: letting the mind wander and quieting the mind. Each serves a unique purpose and contributes to deeper self-awareness.

1. Allowing the Mind to Wander

When we let our minds wander, we create space for creativity, reflection, and problem-solving. Letting our mind wander gives our mind the freedom to explore - to roam without restriction or judgement. When we pay attention to our thoughts as our mind wanders, it can reveal what's important, how we're feeling, and who we are. This is one way to tune into our intuition.

Activities that can give your mind the freedom to wander include:

  • Journaling: Writing down your thoughts, feelings, or ideas can be a powerful way to explore your inner world.

  • Physical movement: Walking, running, hiking, or simply being in nature can help free your mind and spark new insights.

  • Creative activities: Engaging in arts, crafts, or music allows your mind to roam freely while focusing on something tangible.

2. Quieting the Mind

In contrast to letting your mind wander, quieting the mind involves silencing the mental chatter and finding stillness. This practice helps us connect with a deeper sense of peace and presence. Techniques include:

  • Meditation: Close your eyes, focus on your breath, and allow yourself to be fully present in the moment.

  • Deep breathing exercises: Controlled breathing can calm the nervous system and quiet mental noise.

  • Mindfulness practices: Bring your full attention to a single activity, such as savoring a cup of tea or observing your surroundings.

Tips for Building a Self-Connection Practice

Whether you’re new to self-connection or looking to deepen your practice, here are some tips to help:

  • Just start: Even five minutes a day of journaling or meditation can make a difference. Don't overthink it.

  • Release judgment: Let your thoughts flow without critiquing or trying to control them.

  • Adjust Existing Routines: Make small changes to your existing routines. For instance, try removing your earbuds during a walk, turning off the radio when you drive, or closing your eyes while you brush your teeth.

  • Commit to something each day Make self-connection a daily priority, just like any other self-care habit such as taking a shower.

  • Experiment: Try different activities to see what resonates most with you. The goal is to find practices that feel natural and fulfilling.

Self-Connection is Selfless

When we take the time to connect with ourselves, we not only gain clarity about who we are but also ignite a longing for deeper connections with others and the environment. This ripple effect starts with intentional moments of stillness and reflection. By prioritizing self-connection, we lay the groundwork for living a life of alignment and purpose.

And, when we live a life of alignment and purpose we can create generational impact.

Imagine a world where everyone paused to connect with their inner selves. What kind of clarity, creativity, and compassion might emerge? When we honor this connection, we honor our potential to live fully and authentically.

Your Next Step

How can you connect with yourself today? Will you try journaling, take a mindful walk, or simply sit in stillness? Whatever path you choose, remember that self-connection is a practice. It's one that evolves over time but always brings you closer to your true self.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences. How do you connect with yourself?
