We’ve explored defining life’s purpose and shared how purpose is fluid and evolves over time. Let’s now turn our attention to the how - how we can live a life of purpose. To guide this exploration, we revisit our working definition of purpose:

Purpose is a constant state of alignment between who we are and what we do, requiring self-awareness, acceptance, and courageous action.

So, how do we create this alignment?

The answer begins with one powerful word: connection

Alignment isn’t something that happens overnight; it’s the result of cultivating meaningful connections - to ourselves, to each other, and to the environment. These connections serve as the foundation for living a life of purpose.

Let’s explore these three essential connections and how they intertwine to foster alignment in our lives.

1. Connection to Ourselves

Everything begins with the relationship we have with ourselves. Creating a connection to ourselves means carving out space in our lives to quiet our minds, to observe our thoughts and emotions, and to simply be present. In a world that constantly demands our attention, this act of stillness is essential and yet is challenging for most.

How do we create this connection?

  • Prioritize time daily: Set aside moments to reflect, meditate, or simply let your mind wander without judgment. Even five minutes of stillness or journalling can be transformative.

  • Be fully present: Practice mindfulness by focusing on the here and now. Let go of the past and release worries about the future.

  • Listen to your inner self: Pay attention, without judgement, to what your thoughts and emotions are telling you. This self-awareness is the first step toward living a life of purpose.

My journey started with a daily practice of journalling. When we make connecting to ourselves a priority, we become more grounded and self-aware. Interestingly, this inner connection often sparks a longing for the other two connections - to each other and to the environment.

2. Connection to Each Other

Humans are inherently social beings. Our relationships, both deep and fleeting, enrich our lives and provide the support we need to thrive. However, in today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to fall into the trap of surface-level interactions. Building deeper, more meaningful relationships requires intention and effort.

Why are connections with others so important?

  • Studies show that strong, meaningful relationships improve our mental and physical health, increase longevity, and contribute to overall happiness.

  • Shared experiences and authentic connections remind us that we’re not alone and that we all share this journey of life together.

How do we strengthen these connections?

  • Deepen existing relationships: Be present with loved ones, actively listen, and express gratitude.

  • Foster new connections: Smile at strangers, strike up conversations, or volunteer to meet people outside your usual circle.

  • Honor our shared humanity: Recognize that we all share the same space and resources that sustain life. Treat others with empathy and respect.

My journey started with the podcast. I set-out, driven by curiosity, to ask deeper, more meaningful questions. I'm learning that when we cultivate these connections, we create a sense of belonging that fuels our purpose and enriches our alignment.

3. Connection to the Environment

The third pillar of alignment is our relationship with the natural world. Our environment sustains us, yet we often take it for granted. Strengthening this connection can deepen our sense of purpose and help us find balance.

This connection can flow in two directions:

  1. From self and others to the environment: When we are connected to ourselves and each other, we naturally recognize the importance of nurturing the world around us.

  2. From the environment to ourselves: Spending time in nature can quiet our minds and help us connect with our inner selves. Research shows that activities like stargazing, hiking, or simply sitting in a natural setting reduce stress and promote mindfulness.

My journey started with standing on the earth with my bare feet and planting a garden. By fostering a reciprocal relationship with our environment, we not only care for the world but also create space for personal reflection and growth.

The Power of Connection

When we create and nurture these three connections, we begin to align who we are with what we do.

  • Connection to ourselves helps us understand our values and beliefs.

  • Connection to others reminds us of our shared humanity and strengthens our relationships.

  • Connection to the environment grounds us in something greater than ourselves.

Imagine a world where everyone prioritizes these connections. A world where we quiet our minds, deepen our relationships, and honor the environment. What do you see when you imagine this world?

What’s Your Next Step?

Take a moment to reflect on the three connections in your life. How can you strengthen your connection to yourself, to others, or to the environment today? Small, intentional actions can create profound change.
